A Study of the Procedures Performed by Nursing Service Personnel in the Supervisor's Office of San Antonio State Hospital

Abstract

This paper considered the procedures performed by nursing service personnel in the supervisor's office at San Antonio State Hospital. The objective was to determine which activities could be simplified or reassigned to effect maximum utilization of these employees. Criteria were developed which indicated that the acute shortage of personnel in psychiatric hospitals makes it imperative that they be used to optimum advantage. Observations revealed that the supervisor's office served in the dual capacity of an admitting service and nursing service office. It was staffed by nursing service personnel during the day and was the area from which the evening and night supervisory personnel operated. It was determined from this study that many of the numerous activities performed did not properly belong to either functional area. Other duties for which these personnel were responsible were identified as clerical or administrative in nature. In this respect, they did not require any nursing skills to perform them. The non-nursing activities which were required of the evening and night supervisors interfered with their ability to provide adequate supervision of nursing units. Recommendations were made to reorganize this area into separate admissions and nursing service offices and reassign responsibility for the admission service to medical records.
