Should Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, Texas, Develop a Home Care Program?

Abstract

The objectives of the study were to (1) define the scope of home care programs in general and the patients to whom they should be made available; (2) determine an estimate of the number of patients in Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, Texas, that could be suitably treated by a home care program; (3) assess the degree to which Baylor University Medical Center and the community of Dallas, Texas, could support a home care program; and (4) determine the most suitable home care program for Baylor University Medical Center. Literature pertaining to home care programs was researched; physicians posthospital plans of management of patients aged 65 and over after two weeks hospitalization were surveyed; all inpatient medical records in the hospital were surveyed; and key personnel in the hospital and those associated with leading health agencies in the community were interviewed. It was determined that Baylor University Medical Center had several factors limiting its ability to provide a home care program, but many of these could be overcome by various community health agencies. An initial modest home care program was recommended with gradual extension and expansion of the program over the next few years.
