Limitations of an Illusionary Giant: Russian Relations with Egypt and Turkey

Abstract

Since the early 2010s, Russia has become a more active and assertive player in the Middle East. Driven by political, economic, and military interests, it has established closer bilateral ties with most countries in the region. In doing so, Russia has benefited from theregional governments growing interest in diversifying their relations with all great powers. Against this backdrop, this thesis analyzes Russias engagement with the states of the Middle East between 2010 and 2022. Referencing the case studies of Egypt and Turkey,its research framework includes an in-depth evaluation of Russian engagement with both countries in the diplomatic, economic, military, and popular dimensions. How has RussoEgyptian and Russo-Turkish engagement evolved since 2010, and has it provided Moscowwith influence in any or all the dimensions analyzed?
