Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 UPDATE: A Taxonomy of Injuries for Public Health Monitoring and Reporting, Public Health Information Paper (PHIP) No.12-01-0717
Abstract
This document describes the FY 2024 Update to the DCPH-A's Taxonomy of Injuries and non-injury categorizations used in DCPH-A public health reports. The Taxonomy of Injuries provides categories for injury medical encounters based on causal energy sources (e.g., mechanical, environmental, poisonings, etc.). The injury definition consists of over 13,000 specific medical diagnostic codes from the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM). The other non-injury ICD-CM-10 medical conditions are also categorized for medical utilization reporting. The original report can be found at https://apps.dtic.mil/sti/citations/AD1039481, and the most recent previous update is at https://apps.dtic.mil/sti/citations/AD1177880. Each year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updates the ICD-10-CM codes. For transparency, the DCPH-A annually documents the associated changes to the DCPH-A diagnosis classification categories and any associated methodology updates. The FY24 CDC ICD-10-CM update included a total of 442 code changes: 395 new codes, 22 revised codes, and 25 deactivated codes. There were four new injury diagnosis codes; no injury codes were revised or deactivated. The updated codes are presented in attached Tables. The CDC's FY24 code updates are not substantial and align with prior DCPH-A code categories; all codes aligned with or replaced prior codes established in previous reports. The complete updated DCPH-A diagnosis code categorizations and Taxonomy of Injuries spreadsheets are available upon request from: dha.apg.Pub-Health-A.mbx.injuryprevention@health.mil
