Assessing the Role of the Socket Trim Line on Reactive Balance in People with Transfemoral Amputation
Abstract
The biomechanical effectiveness of reactive stepping in response to lateral perturbations is likely to depend on the function of the residual limb hip. We argue that proximal socket trim lines, which compress more soft tissue and musculature around the hip, willinterfere with hip muscle function to a greater extent than more distal trim lines, which will in turn negatively impact reactive stepping. To address this, we plan to compare mediolateral reactive stepping and measures of hip function between groups of people withabove knee amputation who use sockets with high versus low trim lines to determine the effect of trim line on kinematic and behavioral aspects of mediolateral reactive stepping. We also plan to assess residual hip function both with and without a socket donned. Todate we have finalized testing protocol related hip muscle testing, including assessments on N=2, and continue to develop a device to apply mediolateral perturbations.
