Strategy and Roadmap for Advancing Life Cycle Assessment Methodologies: A Proposal for a Special Study

Abstract

The objective of this study was to make life cycle assessment (LCA) advancements that could be integrated to make the Department of Defenses (DoDs) Defense Input Output (DIO) model and associated methods more robust. In Task 1, three software prototypes were developed to automate product system model construction. In Task 2, new life cycle impact assessment characterization factors were created for eutrophication effects and a new software tool to harmonize impact assessment with life cycle data, the LCIA Formatter, was created. In Task 3, a new version of the DIO model was built that uses the USEEIO build architecture and integrates select elements from the former DIO and current USEEIO models.
