Upper Ocean Spatial Structure and Evolution along MISO Pathways in the Indian Ocean
Abstract
A multi-year effort using long-endurance autonomous Seagliders and SGX gliders maintained continuous occupation of a section that sampled the boundary current off the southern tip of Sri Lanka, designed to understand exchange between the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal. Sampling spanned the period between April 2016 to December 2019, after which the COVID pandemic interrupted operation. The nearly four-year record demonstrates that the direct pathway along the Sri Lankan coast plays a significant role in exchange between the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, with important contributions from both surface and subsurface flows.
