Ambient Noise (AN) and Ocean Surface Physics

Abstract

This work has improved understanding of ambient noise in the ocean by expanding conventional wind noise parameterizations to include surface wave breaking and bubble plumes. The focus was on ambient acoustic level sat frequencies from 1 to 10 kHz. The work has included new data collection in which distributed sampling with multiple SWIFT buoys enabled the dependence of ambient noise on ocean surface waves to be isolated from the dependence on surface winds. The work also leveraged an existing long-term dataset from Ocean Weather Station Papa, with a large range of acoustic levels, wind speeds, and wave conditions.
