Short Course on Wargaming Heavily Derived from Matt Caffrey's on Wargaming

Abstract

The purpose of this brief is to provide information on the nature and scope of wargaming so recipients can better: Understand senior leaders use of wargaming, Apply wargaming within their organizations, and Supervise the wargame work of subordinates. Wargaming is art as much as it is science, and the requirements and descriptions described are flexible. The war game process is: Anticipate, Plan, Execute, Analyze, Document, Communicate, and Act. Directed Energy Wargaming has special considerations: Spectrum management, SWAP, BDA, Simulation environments, Adjudication, Operational training, and familiarity. Directed Energy Wargaming requires specialized tools; Most players are unfamiliar with nuances of DE like, "Does this impact the game?" - It depends; Most virtual environments do not readily accommodate realistic DE requirements and effects, Impact of weather, magazine depth, damage assessment, and How do we adapt to provide useable results?
