Understanding the Limits of Artificial Intelligence for Warfighters - Volume 5: Mission Planning

Abstract

This is the fifth report in a five-volume series addressing how artificial intelligence (AI) could be employed to assist warfighters in four distinct areas: cybersecurity, predictive maintenance, wargames, and mission planning. These areas were chosen to reflect the wide variety of potential uses and also to highlight different kinds of limits to AI application. Each use case is presented in a separate volume, as it will be of interest to a different community. This fifth volume provides a description of how AI can be used to conduct mission planning and how these methods compare with more traditional operations research approaches. It is aimed at those with an interest in mission planning, operations research, and AI applications more generally. Volume 1 in the series provides a summary of the findings and recommendations from all use cases, and the other volumes provide detailed analysis of the individual use cases.
