Comparison of Mindfulness Wellness Class Versus Brain Health Education in Veterans with mTBI

Abstract

In the current study, we are conducting a pragmatic, randomized controlled trial of MBSR in Veterans with comorbid PTSD and chronic mild TBI (mTBI). A Brain Health education class serves as an active control condition. The three primary aims of the current study are to evaluate the effectiveness of MBSR in Veterans with a history of co-morbid mTBI and PTSD to: 1) improve functioning in everyday life; 2) reduce PTSD symptoms; and 3) improve cognitive control. If this MBSR treatment intervention works as hypothesized, it could be effectively applied more widely to Veterans with other conditions who experience cognitive and psychiatric symptoms (e.g., stroke, dementia). This study also has potential relevance for military personnel, as mindfulness interventions are currently being explored for their capacity to enhance attentional focus and performance in healthy individuals as well. As of this Year 1 Report, we have thus far conducted 4 MBSR and Brain Health classes with a total of 25 Veterans with a history of mTBI and PTSD (there is no control group in this study).
