Laboratory Assays for Hypothesis Testing and Evaluation of Candidate Easy Release and Nontoxic Deterrent Surfaces

Abstract

The objectives were to work with developers of coatings to: i) test hypotheses with experimental non-toxic formulationsthat are designed to interfere with the adhesion of marine fouling organisms (FR coatings) and/or deter the colonizingstages from attaching (AF approach); and ii) provide efficacy testing to facilitate the down-selection of candidate coatingsfor field testing. Over the course of the award, 1946 individual samples, covering 285 different coating formulations, wereevaluated in the laboratory with a range of marine biofouling organisms and bespoke testing equipment. AF and FRapproaches evaluated included amphiphilic surfaces, zwitterions, and surface lubricity
