Resolution as a Computational Factor in CTH Simulations of a Shaped-Charge Jet

Abstract

Uncertainty associated with resolution was investigated in CTH simulations of the formation of a 65-mm-diameter shaped-charge-jet laboratory device. Simulation outcomes varied in a consistent manner over a wide range of resolution, and several measured jet properties demonstrated limiting behavior, with 2-D and 3-D results converging to similar values. Estimates of the expected mean values and distribution widths for jet properties as a function of resolution were calculated. Jet mass variance due to discretization, resolution dependence of jet temperature, and observations of jet tip structure are also reported.
