Success in a Joint Environment
Abstract
Strengthening joint leaders and teams is an Air Force enterprise initiative aimed at optimizing leaders and teams so that they can consistently think, plan, and fight in joint environments. To achieve this end state, airmen in the total force (officers, civilians, enlisted airmen, guard members, and reserve personnel) must effectively integrate and lead across the future joint warfighting landscape. Foundational to this effort is understanding how the Air Force can improve its assessment process to (1) identify airmen with the attributes, qualities, and skills to succeed in joint positions and (2) assign personnel to such jobs more effectively. The attributes that the Air Force focuses on today might not be the same as those required to become a joint leader or team member in a joint environment. Identifying and evaluating additional attributes and qualities is necessary to ensure that airmen are prepared to acquire and take on the demands of a joint leader and in support of joint teams. The purpose of this research effort was to help the Air Force recruit airmen with attributes that would position them to succeed in joint environments and, in doing so, improve overall service preparedness for the joint fight in future operating environments. The research identifies key attributes for new recruits and provides recommendations for establishing marketing, assessments, accessions, and recruiting standards to recruit candidates with these attributes.
