Evaluation of the Squad Threat Assessment Tool

Abstract

The U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences (ARI) Fort Cavazos Research Unit seeks to improve measures of collective performance, to support underlying skill development. In previous focus groups, Platoon Sergeants and other leaders reported needing: (1) a method for evaluating the quality of decision making within a training exercise, (2) a more specific metric that supplements the current "Go vs. No-Go" performance metric, and (3) guidance on how to convey performance requirements to Soldiers. In response, testing and refining was conducted for a tool developed to assess the cognitive skills underlying a range of Army collective tasks that involve threat detection. Two previously developed versions of the Squad Threat Assessment Tool (STAT) were examined within the context of a relevant Army training exercise. The more functional version was refined to optimize its validity and usability. The refined tool will allow Army leaders to better evaluate and remediate collective performance on tasks involving threat detection and assessment.
