From Scientific Institutions to Research Concepts to Global Collaboration and Beyond: Uncovering Patterns in Scientific Networks

Abstract

This final report highlights work associated with the US Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) Army Research Laboratory (ARL) sabbatical program, awarded to Dr Mark Tschopp for the 2023 calendar year. The motivation behind this sabbatical is to further develop skills in data science, natural language processing, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, in addition to exploring the interdisciplinary field of the science of science. This report aims to encapsulate the essence of the sabbatical. The three independent studies included herein are related to (1) many domains of global collaboration (research concepts, institutions, temporal evolution, etc.), (2) hype words and promotional language in NSF title/abstracts, and (3) funding agency-to-article linkage (study on data quality in open-source databases and in articles). Additional activities conducted during the sabbatical included efforts to disseminate knowledge in machine learning and artificial intelligence within the broader DOD workforce.
