A 26-Year Time Series of Monthly Mean Winds Over the Oceans: Part II Monthly - Anomalies at Selected Points in the North Pacific

Abstract

Time series of surface wind vectors are presented for twenty-two points in the North Pacific in the form of monthly resultant zonal and meridional components and mean scalar wind speed. The quasi-geostrophic model (corrected for friction) used to compute the winds is briefly described and its accuracy is discussed. Monthly anomalies for the 312 months between January 1946 and December 1971 are presented in tabular form, along with the long (26 year) means for each month the standard diviation of the monthly anomalies. Examples of interannual persistance of surface wind anomalies and the association of sea surface temperature and surf ace wind anomalies are presented.
