Statistical Methods in the Multi-Laboratory Validation of a PFAS Measurement Method

Abstract

The Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) is conducting the statistical analyses in the Department of Defense (DoD)-sponsored multi-laboratory validation (MLV) study of the per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) measurement method using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) for eight different environmental matrices. The results of the statistical analyses inform the quality control (QC) acceptance criteria for the method to be established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This report documents the statistical analyses used to characterize the overall performance of the method in the MLV study, highlights instances where statistical formulas used in the analysis differ from the EPA guidance for new method approval, and provides high-level observations about the environmental samples, PFAS, and labs across the aqueous datasets.
