getData: A Toolkit for Automated Retrieval and Formatting of Oceanographic and Atmospheric Data From Online Sources

Abstract

Meteorological and oceanographic data are needed to drive and validate hydrodynamic models. These data can be obtained from publicly available online sources; however, the processes required for users to acquire and format the data vary greatly between sources. Therefore, manually downloading and reformatting data from different sources can be cumbersome and time consuming. A Python toolkit is presented here that allows for the automatic retrieval and reformatting of meteorological and oceanographic data from common online sources. The toolkit provides an efficient and streamlined method for obtaining atmospheric and hydrodynamic data used in model development, validation, and/or testing.
