The Cuban Missile Crisis as a Case study in Gunboat Diplomacy

Abstract

This thesis seeks to advance the argument that the Cuban Missile Crisis is a case study in effective gunboat diplomacy. The method of analysis is a single case study with emphasis on primary sources and cutting-edge research. The results demonstrate that this case meets the criteria for gunboat diplomacy and that the naval quarantine did influence the resolution of the crisis. This case study elucidates recommendations to improve the effectiveness of gunboat diplomacy in modern foreign policy crises, including ambiguity of the threat and the role of allies and partners.
