Strategies and Methods for Effective UXO Classification

Abstract

Advanced geophysical classification (AGC) uses information derived from geophysical sensor data to make dig/no - dig decisions at sites contaminated with unexploded ordnance (UXO). AGC techniques have been developed through Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP)funded projects and other research efforts for several decades. Data processing workflows that incorporate AGC have been implemented in publicly available software packages such as Geosoft's UX Analyze and UXO Lab. These workflows and have been successfully used on multiple Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) Live - Site demonstrations and Military Munitions Response Program (MMRP) projects featuring AGC. These successes have confirmed that AGC can reliably identify targets of interest (TOI) and reduce the number of digs at remediation sites. Indeed, many MMRP projects now prefer - or even require - the use of AGC when remediating sites contaminated with UXO.
