The Sources of Renewed National Dynamism

Abstract

This report is part of a larger project that considers the societal sources of national dynamism and competitive advantage. The authors examine the ways in which national dynamism can be renewed how great powers that begin to stagnate or even decline can recapture energy and competitive advantage. They do so by using historical evidence to develop typologies for the causes of national decline, pathways and processes of national renewal, and distinct national strategies that produce renewal. The report concludes by drawing lessons from this historical evidence for U.S. strategy.
