Two-Dimensional Transitional Mach 6 Flow and a Framework for Upstream Influence

Abstract

Two sets of experimental results are presented in this paper. One set is for a flat plate configuration that is used to characterize the transitional flow in the absence of a 16 degree compression ramp. The second set of results is for the compression ramp itself. The freestream Mach number of the flow is 5.85, with a freestream Reynolds number ranging from 10x10^6 to 30x10^6 per foot. In addition, the scaling of upstream influence is discussed and compared to other scaling studies for laminar, transitional, and turbulent flows. It is believed that the present framework can be used to characterize upstream influence for a wide range of flows.
