Psychological Intangibles (PI):: Squad-Level Assessment and Development Resources

Abstract

Psychological Intangible (PI) refers to a multi-dimensional construct consisting of variables that contribute to small unit mission readiness across the human dimension. Ad hoc squad PI variables were identified and validated (Aude et al., In Press) using the research products described within this report. Products include an assessment instrument to measure PIs during ad hoc squad training exercises. The assessment was refined across several data collections based on statistical analyses as well as user feedback. Methods to improve ad hoc team performance via feedback and development were also a focus of this research. Consequently, sports psychology and feedback best practices literatures were reviewed to determine the optimal approach for delivering brief feedback in the midst of a training exercise. The approach employed is termed squad huddle. A squad huddle job aid was developed and refined based on instructor feedback and implemented to facilitate consistent huddle application. This report details the development of the PI assessment instrument, the squad huddle job aid, and the training guide to help instructors accurately observe and assess PI, complete the instrument, and effectively execute the squad huddle.
