An Assessment of Security and Survivability in a Decisive Action Training Environment

Abstract

This present effort is the final iteration of a multi-year research collaboration between members of the Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) Warrior Leadership Council and the U.S. Army Research Institute (ARI). The aim of this collaboration is to test the effectiveness of various guides to improve aspects of rotational unit performance at JRTC, based on checklists completed by Observer/Coach/Trainers (OCTs). The specific topic of focus for the present effort was security and survivability. A total of 595 checklists were completed by OCTs for rotational units at JRTC. The findings were largely consistent with previous iterations of this collaboration. The checklist offered a nuanced assessment of rotational unit performance, but the implementation of a guide to improve on that performance was largely unsuccessful. Rather, and understandably so given the plethora of factors that contribute to unit performance, other considerations had a larger effect on rotational unit performance. Specifically, units that emplaced formal planning practices (i.e., a common operational picture, a logistical support plan, and a casualty evacuation plan) consistently outperformed those that did not.
