Virtual Aids to Navigation (VATONs) from the USACE LOMA Program, 2018-2023

Abstract

The purpose of this US Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) technical note (TN) is to describe the capability for broadcasting Virtual Aids to Navigation (VATONs) through the network of shore sites (sometimes referred to as terrestrial sites) managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Lock Operations Management Application (LOMA) program, and to document how that capability has been used since its formal establishment in 2018 through the end of calendar year 2023. VATONS are used to mark features relevant to safe navigation, including channel boundaries, shoals, and underwater hazards.
