Abstract
The F-16 air combat fighter was designed to complement the more sophisticated F-15 in the air superiority role and the F-4, F-111, and A-10 in the air-to-surface roles. The prototype model of the aircraft was originally conceived in response to the Air Force's lightweight fighter program. Initiated in 1970, this program was dedicated to the study of energy maneuverability and other emerging aerodynamic technologies for possible use in future fighter aircraft. In 1971, the Air Force decided to test the feasibility of these concepts in actual prototype aircraft. Two of the five companies submitting proposals were selected to build prototypes. In April of 1972, Northrop and General Dynamics began building two YF-17s andYF-16s, respectively.
