Unsteady Separation Mechanism and Mitigation

Abstract

For a compressible, turbulent compression ramp flow, this project demonstrated upstream influence on separation unsteadiness, selective response of separation motion to controlled upstream disturbances, and strong effects of confining sidewalls. The results support a model of separation unsteadiness in which external forcing by boundary layer turbulence drives a weakly-damped global mode of the separation bubble. This case was termed a damped resonator; it represents an intermediate case between instabilities that can be characterized by amplifier or oscillator models. Effective flow control appears achievable by matching actuator-induced perturbations to the global mode of the separation bubble.
