Magnetic Shear and Helical-Field and Conducting-Wall Feedback Stabilization for Toroidal Plasma Confinement (Theta Pinch, Tokamak).

Abstract

Based on the wave packet model, the magnetic shear required and the stability criteria for the convective drift instabilities driven by particle density gradient and electron temperature gradient are obtained and compared to existing experimental data. From some basic assumptions of magnetic flux, energy principle, and the present ordering and expansion techniques, the theoretical displacement, equilibrium, required magnetic (shear) field, and force balance equations of the plasma are derived. Theoretical results calculated from these equations and experimental data measured from the 5-meter Scyllac sector are in excellent agreement. The block diagram of helical-field feedback stabilization using the theoretical equations is proposed for the Scyllac experiments or for computer simulation. (Modified author abstract)
