Analysis of Strain Histories in Structures.

Abstract

The problem of in-service or long-term strain monitoring in engineering structures is examined. The laboratory trials are based upon a number of steel and aluminium tensile specimens designed with stress cancentrations or joints which are welded, bolted or rivetted. For the field trials an accessable quasi-static structure was sought. With help from the Scottish Development Department, two bridge structures have been selected for strain monitoring from welding through on-site erection to final operation under maximal traffic load.
