New Atomic Beam Studies at Low Energies.

Abstract

The major effort has been directed toward production of stable neutral beams of uranium and thorium, and measurement of charge transfer processes between these atomic species and the atmospheric ions N+ and O+. The processes studied can be represented as O(+) + U to O + U(+), N(+) + U to N + U(+), O(+) + Th to O + Th(+), and N(+) + Th to N + Th(+). These reactions are of importance because they may act as sinks for U and Th neutral species. Information on the fate of U and Th is of importance in the development of radar and optical systems codes. In the course of the above measurements, cross sections were also obtained for the charge transfer reactions of U and Th with CO2(+) and N2(+). A secondary effort was the measurement of charge transfer cross sections for ground and excited state O(+) ions in collision with O2 and NO. (Modified author abstract)
