Nomograms for Computing Sun Angles.

Abstract

Effects of sun angle upon the appearance of targets and their surroundings and the effects of shadows and reflections on air-to-ground visual target acquisition are discussed. Nomograms are given for use in computing sun position relative to the horizon. The report describes a method for using two or three nomograms (depending upon the season) and tabulated data to determine the sun's asimuth and elevation for: any day of the year, any longitude, latitudes between 72 N and 72 S, and hours of the day between 0600 and 1800. The nomograms can be used in mission planning to select aircraft headings that will take advantage of the position of the sun. (Modified author abstract)
