Study on Quasi-Stationary Plasma Accelerators,

Abstract

It has been established that the discharge in a pulsed plasma accelerator consists of a number of consecutive stages, part of which have a quasi-stationary nature. This is because the time during which the plasma parameters change in each stage is considerably greater than the transit time of the ions. It is interesting to compare the work of a pulsed accelerator in this regime with a regime where the length of the acceleration stage considerably exceeds the characteristic times of the other stages and is close to total discharge time. Presented in the paper are results from a study on such a quasi-stationary accelerator (discharge time tau sup p =150-4000 microseconds), and a comparison is made with a 'standard pulsed' accelerator (tau sup p =15 microseconds).
