Development of a Prototype Ferrite Tuned Magnetron, QKH1707.
Abstract
The QKH1707 program concerned the design of a prototype ferrite-tuned, Ku-band coaxial magnetron. The tuner developed for this program is a ferrite-loaded, variable-reactance transmission line coupled to the coaxial cavity of the magnetron. The propagation constant of the line is changed and the magnetron is tuned by controlling the magnetic field through the ferrite. This electronic tuning is much faster than mechanical tuning and has a potentially broader bandwidth. Circularly polarized rf fields in the ferrite contribute to the broader tuning range. Cold tests indicated that a 1-1/2% bandwidth could be achieved. Construction and test of an operational ferrite phase shifter have shown that the ferrite tuning concept applied to a coaxial magnetron is a valid and feasible means of obtaining electronic tuning.
