Fish Ladders for Ice Harbor Dam, Snake River, Washington: Hydraulic Model Investigations.

Abstract

Facilities for passing fish upstream over Ice Harbor Dam include a powerhouse fish collection system, auxiliary water supply systems, and a fish ladder on each side of the river. A 1:10-scale model was used to develop designs for the overflow weir portion, regulatory section, and exit of each fish ladder. Tests of the 24-ft-wide, 1V-on-16H-slope south fish ladder indicated that the tendency for self-induced surges in a straight 41-pool section was reduced by 2-ft-long nonoverflow baffles at each end of the weirs. A satisfactory design of full-length overflow weirs with The Dalles-type crests and 21- by 23-in. orifices was adopted. A regulatory section with staggered 21- by 60-in. orifices in nonoverflow baffles was selected from four alternative designs. (Modified author abstract)
