Downpull Forces on Emergency Closure Gates.

Abstract

A 1:25-scale model was used to determine the effects of various bottom shapes and lip extensions on discharge and hydraulic downpull forces affecting a tractor-type emergency closure gate lowered in front of one of dual streamlined intakes for an outlet works that was operated under heads of from 50 to 300 ft. The intake was unusual because the level approach floor was at the same elevation as the river bed and because flow was partly restricted by the sides of the intake structure.
