Laboratory Determination of Current Meter Performance,

Abstract

Neyrpic and Ott current meters with cosine-component propellers were used to measure turbine discharge at major dams on the Columbia and Snake Rivers. The meters were calibrated in a rating flume 5.0 ft wide, 5.8 ft deep and 250.0 ft long. About 385 calibrations were made. Electronic instruments recorded the elapsed time and number of propeller revolutions during each calibration run. Electric impulses controlled by the current meter released spring-loaded darts that marked the distance traveled in a test. The methods used and the results obtained in calibration of a typical Neyrpic meter in the above flume were verified by recalibrating the same meter at five different laboratories in the United States.
