Spectroscopy of Excited States of Small Molecules.

Abstract

A joint theoretical-experimental program was conducted to establish both calculational and experimental techniques to study excited-state transitions in diatomic I2 and ICl. Experimental techniques based on two-step excitation using two synchronized tunable lasers have been developed and were successfully applied to excited-state fluorescence measurements with ICl. Theoretical procedures based on pseudo-potential techniques have also been developed to the point where quantum-chemical calculations are now possible for the excited states of heavier diatomic molecules such as I2 and ICl, including generation of wave functions and orbitals.
