On Mixed Finite Element Approximations.

Abstract

A theory of mixed finite element approximations of a class of linear self-adjoint boundary-value problems is developed which involves splitting a problem of the type T*Tu = f into a pair of canonical equations, Tu = v, T*V = f. Consistency and stability of finite-element/Galerkin approximations of the pair described, convergence criteria are established, and error estimates are derived for a number of important cases.
