Evaluation of Propellant Quick Test to Ascertain Serviceability of Artillery Propellant Stock.

Abstract

The report concerns the versatility of the Propellant Quick Test in its application to standard artillery formulations in order to establish safe life cutoff criteria for single, double, and triple-base propellants. The Quick Test is adaptable to the existing surveillance routine; but it has not been conclusively determined whether its versatility of application suffices to establish reliable hazard cutoff points and, altogether, whether it is founded upon an analytically sound basis. Consequently, the purpose of this program was to investigate and evaluate this test. The procedures used were: Colorimetric microdetermination of nitrogen dioxide in storage atmospheres of bulk propellant; preparing and quick testing synthetic atmospheres; and semiquantitative detection of nitrogen dioxide in storage atmospheres of bulk propellant.
