Search for New Principles of Pattern Recognition Applicable to Advanced Systems: Biological Studies on Vision.

Abstract

The principal goal of this research has been the elucidation of the micro-morphology of the fiber tracts and major glomeruli of the insect brain. This has been completed and a large manuscript is in preparation for submission to the Journal of Morphology which will be a complete mapping and micromorphological study of the central nervous system of Phormia. Two papers have been published in the area of sensory reception and the correlated relationship with the insect central nervous system. A dissertation has been completed on the visual processes in the compound eye utilizing the transmission and scanning electron microscopic investigations on the ultrastructure of the receptors and significant work on dark adaptation. Work has continued on the functional units in the labellar chemo-sensory hairs of the mosquito including behavioral and electrophysiological activity. Results will appear in the Journal of Experimental Zoology. (Author)
