A Space-Charge Radiosonde for the Study of Warm Cloud Electricity,

Abstract

A radiosonde instrument package has been developed to measure the electrical space charge within clouds. Particular attention was given to minimizing such difficulties as contact potential, leakage through the insulation, and the accumulation of electric charge on the instrument housing. After initial testing, eleven radiosonde flights into the clouds were carried out. The resulting charge-elevation profiles are characterized by a gradual decrease of the positive space charge with increasing height in fair weather, and by negative space charge within clouds during rain. It was found that in warm clouds the contribution of small-particle electric charge to the total charge is substantial. (Author)
