Optical SATCOM.

Abstract

The purpose of the program was to establish the feasibility and desirability to the Navy of building a satellite communications link using optical frequencies. Two frequencies will be investigated; 10.6 micrometers for transmission to surface platforms, and 0.47 micrometers for transmission to submerged platforms. The purpose of the task element was to develop a propagation model for a 10.6 micrometers signal through clouds. This model can then be used in the system design of an IOC satellite system.
