Sealed Primary Lithium-Inorganic Electrolyte Cell.
Abstract
The purpose of this program is to develop sealed 'D' size cells employing Li/LiAlCl4 - SOCl2 inorganic electrolyte system. The Research and Development program consists of two tasks: Task I - component capability and design and Task II - construction of sealed portable battery cell prototypes. The authors evaluated the compatibilities of twenty different metals and alloys in the 1.5(M)LiAlCl4-SOCl2 inorganic electrolyte by refluxing the materials (while in contact with carbon cathode) at 85C for approximately one month. All the materials including Ni, Mo and Ta were found to be compatible except the Ni-Clad steel. The steel portion of the Ni-Clad steel was completely dissolved leaving the Ni layer intact. Of the various insulating materials tested in the above manner, only Teflon, Kel-F and glass were found to be compatible. The optimization studies were carried out in an experimental non-hermetic 'C' Cell, according to a factorial experiment with the following variables: Source of LiAlCl4; Concentration of LiAlCl4; Teflon content of the Cathode. Pressure build-up studies were carried out in a modified 'C' cell and it was established that this should not pose any significant problem in the 'D' cell design. The work on the Task - II has been initiated and the results obtained so far are reported here.
