Handheld Infrared Scanner (HIRS).

Abstract

The report describes the effort expended in the design, development, and fabrication of a field worthy, lightweight, battery operated thermal imaging system designated the Handheld Infrared Scanner (HIRS). A primary aim of the program was to develop a thermal imaging system inherently safe for use in environments containing explosive mixtures of gas such as might be present in mines since the end user of the equipment is the Bureau of Mines. The system was judged to meet the permissibility requirements of Schedule 2G by the Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Technical Support Center and approved as permissible for use in gassy coal mines. (Approval No. 2G-2614.)
