Periodic Cavity Oscillations, Shear Flow Instabilities and Nonequilibrium Turbulent Wakes.

Abstract

Three problem areas are considered: Flow induced cavity oscillations; instability of supersonic laminar shear layers; an integral approach to a turbulent incompressible wake subjected to a sudden axial pressure gradient. The three investigations are described in separate parts of this report. In the first part, detailed experimental results of hot wire, microphone and flow visualization measurements are described. In the second part, exploratory experiments on the instability of laminar supersonic shear layers are discussed. In the third part a theoretical analysis of turbulent incompressible wakes subjected to a sudden axial pressure is presented.
