Raman Spectroscopy of Solids.

Abstract

A summary is presented of the major results of experimental and theoretical research, carried out under ARO-Durham auspices, on the scattering of light by elementary excitations in solids. These include the formulation of the macroscopic theory of Raman scattering by collective excitations, the effects of electric fields and strain on Raman scattering, the macroscopic theory of wave vector dependent Raman scattering by collective excitations, theory of resonance Raman scattering and Raman scattering in opaque solids, the Franz-Keldysh mechanism of electric field induced Raman scattering by optical phonons, surface space charge electric field induced Raman scattering by Longitudinal optical phonons in semiconductors, interband electronic Raman scattering in semimetals and semiconductors, and theory of Raman scattering by surface polaritons.
