Automated Evaluation of Interceptor Rocket Motor Designs under Combined Operational and Nuclear Effects Loads.
Abstract
A system has been developed which permits a rapid, preliminary evaluation of solid rocket motors under combined loads in an automated fashion. The operational loads considered are pressurization and acceleration, and the nuclear load component considered is that due to in-depth radiant energy absorption. The system incorporates two finite element structural analysis codes, AMG074 for the operational loads analysis and AMG063 for the stress wave analysis, and a photon energy deposition code, KNISH, for predicting the energy absorption and subsequent stress loadings. The operational loads analysis code, AMG074, was modified to permit both transient ablation effects due to grain burning and viscoelastic material behavior effects to be accounted for in the analysis. The computor- ized evaluation system assumes that failure occurs at the interface bond between the propellant grain and motor case and utilizes a linear cumulative damage criterion to com- bine the effects of the different type loadings.
