Observations of the Use of the Modified WOL Specimen for Environmental Testing of Titanium Alloys.

Abstract

The modified wedge-opening-loading specimen is attractive for use in subcritical cracking tests in various environments. However, results of the current study indicate that care should be exercised in using this specimen with titanium alloys. It was observed that subcritical crack growth occurs in air within short times after loading modified wedge-opening-loading specimens of Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-6Al-2Cb-1Ta-0.8Mo. There is as yet an incomplete understanding of what effects this subcritical cracking may have on the subsequent behavior of the specimen in the test environment. Until there is a better understanding of the subcritical cracking problem of titanium in air, it is recommended that load application be made in the environment or that specimens be placed in the environment immediately upon loading.
