The Orthogonality Check and the Correction of Measured Modes.

Abstract

The orthogonality check of the self-compatibility of any set of measured vibration modes is analyzed for information content. It is shown that the effects of symmetric modal couplings predominate in the orthogonality matrix, and that the assumption that such couplings are entirely responsible for the off-diagonal elements in the check leads to simple procedures for their complete elimination. It is further shown that this assumption should produce little adverse effect on the results of calculations using the modes, as corrected by this procedure, for generalized coordinates.
